Today I am speaking to Karen an Autistic and ADHDer social worker who works with children and families. In our conversation, Karen discusses how she has worked in both the statutory and health setting which has given her a holistic understanding of how service work with children. Karen talks about how she empathises (double empathy) with the children and families she works with as an Autistic social worker and why it enhances her practice/decision-making, but can also make her feel burnt out. Karen discusses how being Autistic and an ADHDer can conflict at times – she likes organisation and boxes in her work, and on the other hand, has a cluttered handbag! Finally, Karen explores disclosing her neurodivergence to her employer.
